How about side gigs for stay at home moms (or dads)? Even a little extra money helps out at home. Here we have selected five stay at home jobs for moms or dads that you can start today, even if you can’t get out of the house much.

Hairdresser

In an age where everyone thinks of a side jobs as being digital in some respect, it might seem strange to start a blog post extolling the virtues of hairdressing. But for a stay at home mom, there’s actually a lot to be said for hairdressing.

Getting Started
It requires minimal equipment. You can get started with a decent pair of hairdressing scissors, a mirror and a comb. If doing men’s hair, a pair of clippers is almost essential.

Marketing
Word of mouth is by far the best marketing method for this side gig. There’s a certain trust factor required and word of mouth achieves that. Also consider ads on message boards in local coffee shops, supermarkets and libraries. Craigslist is another go to, but be mindful of security.

What You Can Expect To Make
With kids’ haircuts in the sub-$10 territory and about $20 for an adult haircut, you’re not going to get rich. But it’s certainly a way to offset the weekly grocery bill, or to start putting away for retirement or the kids’ eduction.

Survey Completer

I do this myself as a way to get a little grocer money. A lot of people seem to think that there’s no real money in it, and it’s a scam. That’s not true at all.

I like Vindale personally and you can sign up with them here. Other notable sites include SwagBucks and PrizeRebel. We have an upcoming article on surveys where you’ll be able to find out more. Swagbucks doesn’t pay cold cash like Vindale and PrizeRebel do — you get reward points that can be traded for various items.

Getting Started
You just need a computer. It helps if you’re the one who buys groceries or manages finances in your household. Sometimes you’ll get rejected after you start the survey because you don’t fit the demographic of the survey — don’t be put off, just start another survey! Increasingly, research companies are interested in people who use tablets and smartphones on a regular basis, so you have a higher chance of acceptance if you say you use them

Marketing
You don’t need to market yourself for this one. Just sign up at multiple sites.

What You Can Expect To Make
The surveys I’m doing generally bring in $1.00 to $1.25. It’s not much money, but if you’re doing 50 of them a week, you’re making a dent in your grocery bill. Some of the sites also have sweepstakes and other competitions to keep you engaged.

Dog Walker/Doggie Daycare

Getting Started
For dog walking, there’s nothing to do: you just borrow the leash from the dog’s owner. For daycare, you’ll likely want to cordon off a portion of your house or risk having canine’s destroying entire place.

Marketing
Local classifieds such as Craigslist are a great way to advertise your services. You can also sign up with Rover and benefit from their marketing, insurance coverage, etc.

What You Can Expect To Make
I make $15/30-minute walk or $18 to drop in and visit a dog. I don’t do doggie daycare, but where I live rates are generally $25-50/day.

Crafting/art

Getting Started
The first thing you need to do is figure out what you’re good at making! Whether it’s silk-screening custom t-shirts, making furniture or jewellery. Once you have that figured out, you can then calculate the cost of manufacturing it and set a sales price.

By far the most popular marketplace for selling arts and crafts is Etsy.

Marketing

Etsy is attractive as it markets itself. Just make sure that you have good descriptions for its search engine to pick up.

What You Can Expect To Make

Some Etsy stores make over $100k/month, but those are rare.  Generally the limiting factor is how much time you can dedicate to actually making stuff. Definitely a good side gig income can be achieved!

Sewing/alterations

Getting Started
Whether you’ve just bought a suit, need a wedding dress altered so it’s “just right”, or lost the button off of your favourite jeans, people need sewing and alterations done. Getting started is as simple as getting a decent sewing kit, some thread and a sewing machine (you can’t practically do this hand sewing).

If you’re artistic, you can branch out to embroidery and stitch things like cushions.

Marketing
Local classifieds like Craigslist are perfect for attracting customers.

What You Can Expect To Make
You should be able to generate about $30/hr doing alterations and sewing.
